Unicorns - Run Like You're Being Chased - Jewels Like Fairy Lights
Borrowing liberally from the math rock soundscapes of bands such as Polvo and Karate, Kingston four piece Colour are an outfit combining the usual stop start time signatures, shifting dynamics and sinewy riff formations synonymous with the genre.
Colour tick all the right boxes and make all the right moves on debut single, UNICORNS, lurching and gyrating in all the right ways, but there's just something a tad too clinical and underwhelming about the sounds they conjure. With a singer who never quite announces his presence with any real authority or personality and a trio of songs that whilst interesting in a minor key way, never really emerge as anything particularly essential.
Lead song, UNICORNS does all the usual shifting dynamics well enough, lurching from minor key mathematical passages to big bounding choruses, but Colour never really inject enough personality or ironically, Colour into proceedings to excite; leaving you ultimately briefly entertained but hardly moved or affected. RUN LIKE YOU'RE BEING CHASED and JEWELS LIKE FAIRY LIGHTS dance to very similar beats, again Colour making all the right noises and pulling all the right shapes, but never once suggesting that they are a band bringing anything particularly new, inspired or original to the party.
